It is not considered disrespectful to not have an obit, and many families choose to skip them. Though there is no legal obligation to publish an obituary, families should make the decision based on their preferences, the wishes of their loved one, and the needs of their extended family and friend network.
You may prefer to write your own obituary while you are still alive instead of having loved ones do so after your death. It's a way to have a final say in how you are remembered, and to save time and grief for those you leave behind.
The more common ones are paid obits, which usually look like classified advertisem*nts. Those are written by the funeral homes or the deceased person's family, and the newspaper is paid to run those. There are also news obits, which are usually about a person who has some level of prominence in the community.
If a family chooses not to write an obituary, that's okay. No law insists families should publish an obituary. But there are several alternative options available for families to help pay tribute to the deceased.
The Deceased Did Not Want One. Before your loved one passes on, they may leave a special request not to have an obituary published, and this could be for many reasons. For example, if they had a complicated past or suffered from mental issues or addictions, they may wish to keep that private.
Why does it cost so much to post an obituary? Publishing an obituary in the newspaper is expensive because of the limited space papers have. Newspapers value every inch of each page, so they must charge to use that limited space for an obituary.
Many funeral homes publish obituaries on their websites. These can usually be located with a Google search on the person's name. Local genealogical and historical societies, public libraries, and some newspaper publishers maintain clipping files of obituaries.
